EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the face of Sergeant Herbert Gibson, a dedicated soldier who served in the 1st Northumbrian Field Ambulance of the Royal Army Medical Corps during World War I. Born in September 1889, Gibson was an Acting Sergeant with the rank of MM. The image is accompanied by a collection of humourous drawings, sent from the battlefield to his beloved girlfriend, Cissi Bell, who resided at 5 Curtis Road in Fenham, Newcastle upon Tyne. Despite the hardships and dangers of war, Gibson's correspondence to Cissi was filled with light-hearted sketches, reflecting the human side of the soldiers' experiences. The collection, mainly consisting of plain postcards from Britain, France, and Germany, offers a unique glimpse into the daily life and camaraderie of the soldiers during the Great War. Gibson's wit and creativity are evident in the drawings, which range from simple doodles to intricate illustrations. Though Gibson and Cissi never married, their connection remained strong throughout the war. Gibson survived the conflict, and the humourous drawings serve as a poignant reminder of the human spirit that endured even in the most challenging of circumstances. This photograph and collection offer a valuable insight into the history of the 1st Northumbrian Field Ambulance and the personal stories of those who served in the Royal Army Medical Corps during World War I.
