This evocative photograph captures the spirit of the Petrograd May Day Demonstration of 1917, an event that would come to symbolize the beginning of the Russian Revolution. The demonstration was intended to show support for the new Provisional Government and to demand greater rights and freedoms for the working class. However, it soon turned into a violent clash between the demonstrators and the military, leading to widespread unrest and ultimately, the fall of the Provisional Government and the rise of the Bolsheviks.
