EDITORS COMMENTS
In this poignant photograph, we see Peter II of Yugoslavia (1923-1970) mourning the loss of his father, King Alexander I of Yugoslavia, who was assassinated in France in 1934. The young prince is depicted here with his mother, Princess Maria of Romania (1900-1961), and his siblings, Tomislave (1928-2000) and Prince Andrej (1929-1990). The image captures the profound sadness and grief that enveloped the royal family following the shocking and untimely death of the King. Princess Maria, dressed in official mourning attire, stands steadfastly by her son's side, offering him comfort and support during this difficult time. The three princes, Tomislave, Andrej, and Peter II, stand somberly behind their mother, their young faces etched with sorrow. The image is a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the enduring bond between a mother and her children. King Alexander I of Yugoslavia was assassinated in Marseille, France, on October 9, 1934, by members of the Ustashe, a Croatian nationalist group. His death marked a significant turning point in Yugoslav history, as it came at a time when tensions between the various ethnic groups in the kingdom were already running high. The assassination led to widespread unrest and ultimately contributed to the disintegration of the Yugoslav monarchy. Princess Maria, who was the daughter of King Ferdinand I of Romania, died in London in 1961. She is buried at Frogmore, the royal burial grounds in Windsor Great Park, alongside her husband, King Alexander I of Yugoslavia. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the royal family's tragic past and the enduring bond between a mother and her children.
