EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic print depicts a significant moment in the annals of French history: the institution of the prestigious Order of Saint-Michel by King Louis XI in August 1469. The Order of Saint-Michel, also known as the Order of Saint Michael, is one of the oldest and most illustrious chivalric orders in the world, with a rich history that spans over six centuries. King Louis XI, who ruled France from 1461 to 1483, is shown in the print surrounded by his nobles and clergy, all dressed in their finest attire. The king, wearing the royal robes and holding the scepter and orb, is bestowing the insignia of the Order upon a kneeling knight. The knight, in turn, holds up his sword in fealty and loyalty to the king. The Order of Saint-Michel was established to recognize and reward exceptional military and civil merit, as well as to promote the values of chivalry, loyalty, and piety. The Order's insignia features the image of the archangel Saint Michael, who is depicted slaying a dragon, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. The Order's motto, "In hoc signo vinces," which means "In this sign, you will conquer," reflects the belief in the protective power of the Order's patron saint. This print offers a glimpse into the grandeur and splendor of the medieval court, as well as the importance of chivalry and the role it played in shaping the history of France. The Order of Saint-Michel continues to exist today, and its members include heads of state, nobility, and other distinguished individuals from around the world.
