EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a collection of Old English coins from the 1960s, displaying the rich history of British currency before decimalisation. The coins, arranged from top to bottom, begin with the penny, half penny, and threepenny bit. These small copper coins were commonly used for everyday transactions. Moving on, we find the half crown, two shillings, and one shilling coins. The half crown, worth two shillings and sixpence, was a silver coin, while the two shillings, or florins, and one shilling, or bob, were both silver and copper coins, respectively. The obverse side of these coins features the portraits of Queen Elizabeth II, who reigned from 1952 to 1966 for the penny, halfpenny, threepenny bit, and shilling, and from 1966 to 1980 for the half crown, two shillings, and sixpence. The halfpenny and threepenny bit were the last coins to bear the portrait of the young queen with the 'young head' design, while the larger coins featured the 'new head' design. These coins, minted during the 1960s, offer a glimpse into the past, showcasing the intricate designs and historical significance of pre-decimalisation British coinage. The print serves as a reminder of the tangible connection to our monetary heritage, making it an essential addition to any history or numismatics collection.
