EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts Spherulites agariciformis, also known as the striped threadfin, polyneme, plebeian, polydactylus, plebeius, cheilodiptere, heptacanthe, pomatomus, saltatrix, polinemo, plebeo, cheilodittero, ettcanto, or bluefish. The illustration is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The intricate details of this fish are beautifully rendered in the engraving, which was drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre and directed by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. Turpin, a French botanical illustrator of the 19th century, is renowned for his exceptional talent in capturing the natural world with remarkable accuracy and precision. The Spherulites agariciformis is a fish commonly found in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. It is characterized by its elongated body, blue-green back, and silver-white belly, with horizontal stripes running along its sides. The fish's dorsal, pectoral, and anal fins have a blue tint, while its caudal fin is deeply forked. The engraving also highlights the fish's various appendages, including its gill covers, pectoral fins, and dorsal and anal fins. The intricately detailed scales on the fish's body are also visible, adding to the overall beauty and accuracy of the illustration. This stunning engraving is an excellent example of the high-quality botanical and ichthyological illustrations produced during the 19th century, and a testament to the skill and artistry of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin and the team of talented artists and engravers who worked on the Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali.
