EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the corner exterior of the Duke of Edinburgh pub in Wimbledon, London. The historic public house, located at SW19 1JN, has been a cherished local institution for many years, despite a tumultuous past. The image reveals the pub's distinctive red brick facade, adorned with ornate detailing and the familiar "Duke of Edinburgh" sign. The back of the print reveals a fascinating historical narrative. The Duke of Edinburgh, which was not affiliated with the Charrington and Company Limited, was severely damaged during World War II. The first bombing occurred on August 15, 1940, and the pub was reopened just over a year later, on May 24, 1941. However, the pub was once again damaged and closed on July 10, 1944. Regrettably, the pub has since been demolished. Despite its destruction, the memory of the Duke of Edinburgh lives on through photographs like this one. The pub was not only a popular watering hole but also a community hub, where locals gathered to socialize, watch sports, and celebrate special occasions. This image serves as a poignant reminder of the pub's rich history and the role it played in the lives of the people of Wimbledon.
