EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored steel engraving depicts the Mayapple, or American Mandrake, Podophyllum peltatum, also known as Podophylle pelte. The image is a meticulously detailed botanical representation, created by the skilled hands of Edouard Maubert and expertly engraved by Lebrun. The Mayapple is a native wildflower of eastern North America, characterized by its large, umbrella-shaped, yellow-green to purple-tinged, bell-shaped flowers that bloom in late spring. The plant is further distinguished by its large, round, green fruit, which resembles an apple and gives the Mayapple its common name. The Mayapple has a long history of medicinal use, particularly for the treatment of warts and certain skin conditions. The plant contains podophyllin, a toxic compound that was once used in the preparation of a powerful ointment for wart removal. However, due to its toxicity, the use of Mayapple for medicinal purposes is now limited and requires the expertise of a trained healthcare professional. This beautiful engraving is a testament to the intricacy and artistry of 19th-century botanical illustration. It was created as part of the Flore Medicale, a comprehensive botanical work published by Pierre Oscar Reveil, A. Dupuis, Fr. Gerard, and Francois Herincqs between 1864 and 1871. The work was published in Paris by L. Guerin and is considered a significant contribution to the scientific record of the natural world.
