EDITORS COMMENTS
Madame Marie Laurent, the renowned French actress, gracefully portrays the tragic figure of Queen Marie Antoinette in the play "La Corde" (The Rope) at the Theatre du Cirque Olympique in Paris during the 1840s. In this handcoloured lithograph, created by Ferdinand Laloue and Anicet Bourgeois, and based on an illustration by Alexandre Lacauchie, Marie Laurent is depicted in the final moments of the play, where Antoinette is led to the guillotine. Her regal bearing and expressive face convey the sorrow, dignity, and defiance of the queen, despite the impending execution. The intricate details of her elaborate costume, complete with the iconic cap and long, flowing robes, add to the grandeur and drama of the scene. This poignant image is taken from Victor Dollet's Galerie Dramatique: Costumes des Theatres de Paris, published in 1845, and offers a glimpse into the theatrical world of 19th century Paris and the captivating performances of its most celebrated actresses.
