EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative 14th century image, King Edward III of England, resplendently dressed in regal attire, is depicted in the company of the Countess of Salisbury. The scene, believed to have been captured around the year 1348, holds significant historical importance as it is closely associated with the origin of the Most Noble Order of the Garter. King Edward III, a prominent figure in English history, ruled from 1327 until his death in 1377. He is renowned for his military victories, especially against the Scots and the French, and for his efforts to strengthen the English monarchy. The Countess of Salisbury, whose identity is not definitively known but is traditionally believed to be Constance of Lancaster, was a noblewoman of great influence and beauty. According to the Chronicles of Jean Froissart, an esteemed French historian of the Middle Ages, the Countess of Salisbury lost a valuable garter during a dance at a court event. The King, who was amused by the incident, picked it up and returned it to her, remarking that she should be rewarded for her grace and charm. Inspired by this moment, King Edward III established the Order of the Garter, an exclusive and prestigious chivalric order, in 1348. The Order, which still exists today, is the oldest and most senior British Order of Chivalry. This image, with its rich tapestry of history and tradition, offers a glimpse into the medieval world of kings, queens, and noblewomen, and the customs and traditions that shaped the course of English history.
