EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts the vibrant and exotic Flamingo Flower, or Anthurium splendidum, as it was beautifully illustrated by Pieter de Pannemaeker for Jean Linden's Horticole publication in Brussels in 1884. The Anthurium splendidum, also known as the Flamingo Lily, is a tropical plant native to Central and South America. Known for its unique and eye-catching appearance, this plant has become a popular ornamental species worldwide. The Flamingo Flower derives its common name from the bright red, waxy spathe that surrounds its small, white inflorescence, resembling the colorful legs and feet of a flamingo. The large, glossy, heart-shaped spadix, or the spike-like structure in the center of the spathe, adds to the plant's allure. The lush, green foliage and the contrasting colors of the spathe and spadix create a visually captivating display. Chromolithography, a color printing process that gained popularity during the late 19th century, was used to create this intricately detailed and lifelike illustration of the Anthurium splendidum. Pieter de Pannemaeker, a renowned Belgian botanical artist, expertly captured the essence of this exotic plant, allowing us to appreciate its beauty and uniqueness even from a distance. This botanical illustration not only serves as a testament to the artistic skill and innovation of the time but also highlights the fascination with the tropical and exotic plants that flourished during the Victorian era. The Anthurium splendidum, with its alluring and distinctive features, continues to captivate plant enthusiasts and collectors to this day.
