EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving by Andrea Freschi, after Antoine Cardon, depicts an intriguing scene from the traditional Chinese paper-making process during the Qing Dynasty. The image showcases young bamboo shoots being meticulously prepared for the transformation into delicate and elegant paper. The process begins with the bamboo shoots being stripped of their outer bark, which is then beaten and soaked in clear river water for a fortnight. The water infuses the fibers of the bamboo with moisture, softening them and making them pliable. Once the fibers have absorbed enough water, they are carefully spread out on a flat surface and pressed to remove excess water. The resulting material is then layered and pressed again, forming a thin sheet of paper. This labor-intensive process is repeated numerous times to create stacks of paper, which are then left to dry in the sun. The hand-colored copperplate engraving beautifully captures the intricacies of this ancient craft, showcasing the harmony between nature and human ingenuity. Chinese paper, also known as Xuan paper, has a rich history dating back over 2,000 years. It has been used for various purposes, including calligraphy, painting, and bookmaking. The paper's unique texture and translucency have made it a prized material in the art world, and it continues to be cherished for its beauty and versatility.
