EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, drawn and engraved by Francois Nicolas Martinet, showcases two captivating birds from different continents: the Black-naped Monarch (Hypothymis azurea) and the Hooded Warbler (Setophaga citrina). The Black-naped Monarch, also known as the Gobe-mouche blue des Philippines or the Blue-crowned Flycatcher, is a small bird native to the Philippines. The female is depicted with a black nape, a blue crown, and a white underbelly, sitting gracefully on a branch. In the background, a lily (Lilium imperialis) and a tulip (Tulipa) add a touch of elegance to the scene. The Hooded Warbler, or the Gobe-mouche de la Louisiane in French, is a New World warbler native to North America. The male is shown with a distinctive hood, a yellow belly, and a brown back. He is perched on a branch adorned with a Gesneriana flower, adding a burst of color to the image. This engraving is taken from the third edition of Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon's Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux, published in Paris between 1749 and 1804. The work was revised and significantly expanded by Daniel Rabel, Maria Sibylla Merian, and Pierre Joseph Buchoz. The botanical illustrations were produced by some of the most talented artists of the time, including Buchoz and Rabel. The intricate details and vibrant colors of this engraving showcase the beauty and diversity of both the birds and the plants of their respective habitats. This artwork is a testament to the skill and artistry of the engravers and the naturalists of the time, and remains a valuable contribution to the history of ornithology and botanical illustration.
