This evocative photograph captures the magic of a special evening at Lands End, Cornwall, in 1988. The iconic Lands End Hotel, perched on the cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, played host to a gathering of generous supporters for BBC Children in Need. At the heart of the scene, a bearded man in a smart suit, Peter John de Savary (b.1944), the English entrepreneur who owned both Lands End and John o' Groats at the time, sits amongst the guests. The late evening air is filled with anticipation and warmth as the group gathers around wicker chairs, their faces illuminated by the soft glow of lanterns and the flickering flames of a bonfire. BBC Children in Need, an iconic British charity, had come to Lands End to raise vital funds for children in need across the UK.
