EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Amethystine Python, scientifically known as Simalia amethistina, also referred to as the Amethyst Python or Scrub Python. This magnificent reptile is native to the tropical rainforests of Sri Lanka, northern Australia, and other parts of Southeast Asia. The engraving, drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre and directed by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, was published in Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science, in Florence, Italy, in 1837. Turpin, a French botanical illustrator, is renowned for his exceptional talent and is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century. The Amethystine Python is a large, powerful snake, with an average length of 6.5 feet, although some specimens can grow up to 13 feet long. This serpent is characterized by its beautiful, glossy scales, which range from a deep purple-blue to a darker, almost black color. The Amethystine Python is a non-venomous constrictor, feeding primarily on small mammals, birds, and reptiles. This engraving also illustrates some of the Amethystine Python's unique features, such as its yellow and banded belly, which helps it blend in with the leaf litter on the forest floor. The engraving also shows the snake's head, which is adorned with a distinctive, broad, and flat head shield. The intricate details of the Amethystine Python's scales, as well as the delicate shading and coloring, are beautifully captured in this hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving. This historical artwork not only showcases the natural beauty of this fascinating reptile but also highlights the exceptional skill and artistry of Turpin and his collaborators.
