EDITORS COMMENTS
This 18th century copperplate engraving, taken from Denis Diderot's Encyclopedia published in Pellet, Geneva, in 1779, offers a fascinating glimpse into the medical practices of the past. The image depicts a surgeon's toolkit, featuring various instruments essential for performing surgical procedures during this era. At the center of the engraving, we find a surgeon meticulously working on a patient's wound, using a pair of fine-pointed sutures, numbered 1 and 2. These sutures, made of silk or catgut, were used to close incisions and promote healing. The surgeon's deft hands also hold a tourniquet, numbered 3, which was employed to restrict blood flow to a limb during surgery, making the surgical site less messy and easier to work on. Dominique Anel's fine-pointed syringe, numbered 4, is also visible in the image. This syringe, with its long, slender needle, was used for injecting various substances, such as medications or anesthetics, directly into a patient's body. The syringe was often accompanied by siphons, numbered 5, which helped to create a vacuum, making it easier to draw up liquids for injection. The toolkit also includes several injection tubes, numbered 6-9, which were used to connect the syringe to various containers, allowing for the easy transfer of liquids. Additionally, the surgeon has a large 18-sheet bandage for complex fractures, numbered 10, and a graded compress, numbered 11, which were used to support and protect injuries. This intricately detailed engraving provides a unique perspective into the surgical practices of the 18th century, showcasing the skill and dedication of surgeons during this time period. It is a testament to the advancements in medical knowledge and technology, even as we continue to build upon these foundations in modern medicine.
