Nestorius is most infamously known for his heretical views regarding the nature of Jesus Christ, which led to his deposition at the Council of Ephesus in 431. Born in Antioch, Syria, Nestorius rose through the ranks of the Christian clergy, gaining a reputation for his strict adherence to orthodox doctrine. However, his teachings on the relationship between the divine and human natures of Jesus began to raise concerns among some of his colleagues. Nestorius maintained that Mary could not be called Theotokos, or God-bearer, as she had only given birth to the human Jesus, not the divine Christ.
