EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the spirit of determination and patriotism as members of the Naval Reserve, coast-guards, and liberty-men make their way to Portsmouth to join their ships at the outbreak of World War I. With the mobilization of the British naval forces in full swing, the establishment of a Naval Reserve by Lord Fisher proved to be a crucial decision. By August 2, 1914, all reserves were called up, and within a day, the entire fleet had been mobilized. In this image, reservists can be seen carrying sacks, likely containing their personal belongings, as they set off to answer their country's call to arms. The beginning of a long and arduous journey towards defending their homeland and protecting British interests on the high seas, these men embodied the courage and resilience of the British people during the First World War. This historical photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the naval reserves during the early days of the conflict, and the instrumental role they played in safeguarding the security of the United Kingdom.
