EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the historic harbor of Luderitz, Namibia, also known as Angra Pequena, in the late 1800s. The image, circa 1860, transports us back in time to an era of exploration and discovery. The harbor, nestled among the rugged rocks and crashing waves, served as a vital anchor for early European settlers and traders, who sought to establish a foothold in this remote and inhospitable region. Angra Pequena, or "Little Bay," was originally named Angra Pequena de Sao Jose by the Portuguese explorer Diogo Cao in 1486. However, it was not until the late 19th century that the harbor began to attract significant European interest. German merchant Adolf Luderitz established a trading post here in 1883, leading to the eventual founding of the town of Luderitz in 1892. The photograph showcases the simple yet functional structures that once lined the harbor, including wooden boats and sheds. The boats, with their distinctive sails and rigging, are reminiscent of the intrepid explorers and traders who braved the treacherous waters to reach this isolated outpost. The sheds, meanwhile, served as storage facilities for valuable goods, such as ivory, hides, and other commodities. Despite the passage of time, this photograph remains an invaluable record of Namibia's rich history. It offers a glimpse into the past, when the harsh, unforgiving landscape of Luderitz was transformed into a bustling hub of activity and commerce. Today, the harbor continues to play an important role in the local community, serving as a vital link to the outside world and a reminder of the area's storied past.
