EDITORS COMMENTS
Mata Hari, born Margarete Gertrude Zelle in Leeuwarden, Netherlands, in 1876, rose to international fame as a dancer at the prestigious Folies Bergère in Paris. Known as the 'Eye of Dawn,' Mata Hari's allure and enigmatic performances captivated audiences, particularly her Spanish Dance. In this image, Mata Hari is seen in the midst of her Spanish Dance, her expressive face and fluid movements conveying a sense of passion and seduction. The critic Serano, who attended one of her performances in 1917, was moved to praise her artistry, writing, "Mata Hari is a voluptuous dancer, whose movements are full of grace and sensuality. Her Spanish Dance is a masterpiece of rhythm and passion, leaving the audience breathless." Mata Hari's performances at the Folies Bergère were a departure from her earlier life, which was marked by poverty and hardship. She had been married multiple times and had lived in Java, Indonesia, where she had learned the Javanese dance that would later become her signature move. Despite her success, Mata Hari's life was not without controversy. She was accused of being a spy for Germany during World War I and was eventually executed by firing squad in 1917. However, her legacy as a dancer and a symbol of female sexuality and independence endures, making her a fascinating figure in the history of dance and popular culture. This photograph, taken during her time at the Folies Bergère, captures the essence of Mata Hari's allure and the magnetic power of her performances. It is a testament to the enduring appeal of the enigmatic and captivating 'Eye of Dawn.'
