EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts Maria I of Portugal (1734-1816), the Queen of Portugal, Brazil, and the Algarves, and her husband, Peter III of Portugal (1717-1786). The image, colored in the 19th century, captures the regal elegance and piety of the royal couple. Maria I, also known as Maria I the Mad, ascended to the Portuguese throne in 1777, following the death of her father, Joseph I. Her reign was marked by instability, as she was declared mentally unfit to rule, and her husband, Peter III, was brought in to govern as her consort. Their marriage, however, was short-lived, as Peter was assassinated in 1786, leaving Maria I to rule alone once again. The image shows Maria I wearing a grand, ornate gown, adorned with intricate embroidery and a high collar, while Peter III is depicted in military attire, reflecting his status as a former military commander. The couple gazes intently at each other, their hands intertwined, symbolizing the bond of matrimony and the unity of their kingdoms. The background of the engraving is adorned with various symbols of power and authority, including a crown, a scepter, and a globe, emphasizing the grandeur and majesty of the Portuguese monarchy during this period. The image serves as a testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of Europe during the late 18th century, and offers a glimpse into the lives of two monarchs who played significant roles in shaping the political landscape of Portugal and its colonies.
