Their Majesties Court by Sir John Lavery

Reproduction of a painting by Sir John Lavery in The Sphere, of a painting which is now lost showing the scene of dazzling splendour in the ball room at Buckingham Palace during a court presentation in 1931. Lavery made studies of many famous socialites for this painting including Lady Georgina Curzon, Miss Margaret Whigham (later Duchess of Argyll), Miss Diana Churchill, Miss Baba Beaton and Lady Ponsonby. The combined scale and detail in the picture drew much comment when it was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1932. Accompanying sketches were shown at Colgnaghis gallery in the same year and the main picture was also seen in Paris. Its whereabouts now is unknown. Date: 1935

EDITORS COMMENTS
Their Majesties Court: A Dazzling Spectacle of 1930s London Society This evocative reproduction of Sir John Lavery's lost painting, "Their Majesties Court," transports us back to the grandeur and splendor of a court presentation at Buckingham Palace in 1931. The scene unfolds in the magnificent ballroom, where the air is thick with anticipation and excitement. Sir John Lavery, a renowned Irish painter, meticulously captured the essence of this historic event, immortalizing the faces and fashions of the era's most famous socialites. Among those depicted are Lady Georgina Curzon, Miss Margaret Whigham (later Duchess of Argyll), Miss Diana Churchill, and Miss Baba Beaton. Each figure is rendered with exquisite detail, their expressions and body language revealing the intrigue and drama of the moment. The combined scale and detail in the picture drew much comment when it was first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1932. Accompanying sketches were shown at Colnaghi's gallery in the same year, and the main painting was also displayed in Paris. However, the whereabouts of the original painting are now unknown. Their Majesties Court offers a glimpse into a bygone era, a time when court presentations were the height of London society's seasonal events. The grandeur and opulence of the ballroom, the elegance of the attendees, and the palpable excitement in the air all come together to create a truly captivating scene. This reproduction serves as a reminder of the spectacle and grandeur that once defined royal events in the 1930s.
