EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures the aftermath of the Lowestoft Bombardment of 1916, an unexpected attack on the east coast of England by a German naval squadron. The image shows the extensive damage inflicted upon a shop and a convalescent home, both of which were among the many buildings targeted during the early hours of Tuesday, 25th April. The War Office reported the following day that a convalescent home, a swimming bath, the pier, and around 40 dwelling houses were extensively damaged, with an additional 200 houses suffering slight damage. Tragically, the attack claimed the lives of two men, one woman, and one child. The peaceful town of Lowestoft, located in the county of Suffolk in Anglia, was taken by surprise as the First World War raged on in Europe. This photograph serves as a haunting reminder of the devastating impact of the bombardment, which left the community reeling from the destruction and loss.
