Lady Stradbroke posed with bombs dropped on Henham Hall, WW1

Lady Stradbroke, formerly Helena Fraser and wife of George Rous, 3rd Earl of Stradbroke, pictured in nurses uniform at the family home of Henham Hall in Suffolk contemplating the bombs dropped by German aircraft in April 1915. The house was converted into a military hospital during the First World War and received convoys of wounded soldiers directly from France, who were passed on to the Red Cross once sufficiently well. Lady Stradbroke took sole charge as matron and efficiently superintended the hospital. Henham Hall was demolished in 1953. Date: 1915

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures Lady Stradbroke, formerly Helena Fraser, in a poignant moment at the family home of Henham Hall in Suffolk during the First World War. Dressed in a nurses uniform, Lady Stradbroke stands amidst the ruins of her once grand estate, now scarred by the bombs dropped by German aircraft in April 1915. Henham Hall had been converted into a military hospital, receiving convoys of wounded soldiers directly from the front lines in France. Lady Stradbroke took sole charge as matron, efficiently supervising the hospital and ensuring the care and comfort of the soldiers. The Red Cross took over once they were sufficiently well. Tragically, Henham Hall was demolished in 1953, but this image serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made during the Great War on the home front, particularly by the women who stepped up to support their communities and care for the wounded. Lady Stradbroke's unwavering dedication to nursing and her role as a Marchioness of the Peerage make this photograph a significant historical document.
