EDITORS COMMENTS
Joseph Hopkinson: A Man of Law and Poetry (1770-1842) This portrait depicts Joseph Hopkinson, an accomplished American judge and jurist, whose legal career was not his only passion. Born in Philadelphia in 1770, Hopkinson dedicated his professional life to the legal field, serving as a judge of the Court of Common Pleas and later becoming a justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. However, when the clock struck leisure hours, Hopkinson's quill took on a different role. In the tranquility of his personal time, Hopkinson penned the words to "Hail, Columbia," a patriotic poem that would later become the lyrics of the United States' national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner." Composed in 1798, the poem was set to the tune of a popular British song, "To Anacreon in Heaven," and was intended to be sung at a dinner celebrating the ratification of the Jay Treaty between the United States and Great Britain. Hopkinson's poetic masterpiece captured the spirit of the young nation, extolling the virtues of America as a "happy land" and a "land of the free." The poem's powerful imagery and patriotic fervor resonated with the American people, and it was later adopted as the national anthem in 1931. This photograph, a testament to Hopkinson's dual roles as a legal luminary and a poetic visionary, offers a glimpse into the life of an extraordinary man who, in his leisure moments, left an indelible mark on American history.
