EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the moment during King George IV's coronation in July 1821, when Henry William Paget, 1st Marquess of Anglesey (1768-1854), carried the historic St. Edward's Crown as the Lord High Steward of England. Dressed in the grand attire of the time, Anglesey wears a velvet cloak lined with ermine, a white satin garter, and white tights. He cradles the ornate crown, adorned with precious stones and gold, with a sense of reverence and dignity. The cushion on which the crown rests is also decorated with intricate embroidery and rich fabrics. The scene transports us back to the opulent 1820s and the grandeur of the Georgian era. Anglesey's strong and confident posture, combined with the solemnity of the ceremony, makes for a captivating image. This photograph is a testament to the grandeur and tradition of the British monarchy and the important role of the Lord High Steward in the coronation ceremony.
