EDITORS COMMENTS
Henri, Comte De Chambord (1820-1883), the Bourbon claimant to the French throne, is depicted in this striking photograph. Known to loyalists as Henri V, he exudes an air of regal authority with his plump potbelly, staring eyes, and well-groomed beard. Dressed in a fashionable waistcoat, the Comte's attire reflects the opulence and elegance of the Ancien Régime. Born in Rome, Italy, Henri was the great-grandnephew of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette. When the monarchy was overthrown in the French Revolution, the Bourbon dynasty went into exile. Henri's father, the Duke of Berry, was assassinated in 1820, making Henri the heir to the Bourbon claim to the French throne. Despite his royal lineage, Henri spent most of his life in Austria and Italy, away from France. He was educated in Vienna and served in the Austrian army. In 1836, he married Maria Anna of Austria, the Archduchess of Austria-Este, in a grand ceremony in Milan. Henri's claim to the French throne was not recognized by the French government, but he was popular among loyalists who longed for the return of the monarchy. He was known for his piety and his support of the Catholic Church. In 1871, after the Franco-Prussian War, some French monarchists attempted to proclaim Henri as king, but the movement was quickly suppressed. Henri died in Rome in 1883, and his body was transported to France for burial in the Royal Basilica of Saint-Denis. Although he never ruled France, Henri's legacy as the Bourbon claimant to the throne continues to be an intriguing chapter in French history.
