EDITORS COMMENTS
Harlakenden House, nestled in the picturesque town of Cornish, New Hampshire, USA, once stood as a symbol of American literary and political history. Built in the late 19th century, this grand edifice served as the summer residence for two of the most influential figures of the early 20th century: American novelist Winston Churchill and President Woodrow Wilson. The year was 1905 when this photograph was taken, capturing the beauty and grandeur of Harlakenden House in its prime. Churchill, a prolific writer and journalist, purchased the estate in 1897 and spent his summers there, penning some of his most notable works. He was known to have found inspiration in the serene surroundings of the White Mountains and the tranquility of the lake that lay just beyond the property. A few years later, in 1913, President Woodrow Wilson and his wife, Edith, discovered Harlakenden House during a visit to the area. They were immediately drawn to the breathtaking views and the peaceful atmosphere, and the Wilson family made it their summer retreat for the next two years. Sadly, the history of Harlakenden House came to an abrupt end in 1923 when a devastating fire consumed the once magnificent building. Today, all that remains are memories and the stories passed down through generations. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of a bygone era, when two great American figures found solace and inspiration in the beauty of the Cornish countryside.
