EDITORS COMMENTS
In this image from ancient mythology, Hades, also known as Dis or Pluto in Roman mythology, is depicted as the enigmatic ruler of the underworld. Surrounded by shadows and darkness, Hades sits on his throne, clad in a flowing robe and adorned with a crown of ivy. His three-headed hound, Cerberus, lies at his feet, its serpentine heads constantly on the alert, guarding the entrance to the underworld and preventing the dead from escaping. Hades, the eldest of the Olympian gods, was the god of the dead and the judge of the underworld. He was often depicted as a stern and unforgiving figure, yet also as a just and fair ruler. According to Greek mythology, when someone died, their soul would be carried to the underworld by Charon, the ferryman, to be judged by Hades. Depending on their deeds in life, souls would be sent to either Elysium, the paradise for the virtuous, or Tartarus, the abyss for the wicked. Cerberus, the three-headed hound of Hades, was a fearsome creature with serpentine bodies for its middle and lower heads, and a human head for its upper one. It had a lion's mane and a tail that was a serpent. Cerberus was a formidable guardian, preventing the living from entering the underworld and the dead from escaping. This powerful and evocative image of Hades and Cerberus serves as a reminder of the ancient belief in the afterlife and the role of the gods in shaping the fate of the deceased. It is a fascinating glimpse into the rich and complex mythology of ancient Greece and Rome.
