EDITORS COMMENTS
Gettysburg Battlefield: The Moment of Picketts Charge - A Turning Point in the American Civil War This evocative image captures the intensity and chaos of the pivotal moment during the Battle of Gettysburg, marking a turning point in the American Civil War. The Union army, under the command of General George G. Meade, had successfully repelled several Confederate attacks throughout the day of July 3, 1863. In an audacious attempt to breach the Union line, General George E. Pickett led his Confederate forces in a massive frontal assault, known as Pickett's Charge. The Union lines, as seen in this photograph from Mary Evans Picture Library, were prepared for the onslaught. Cannonballs fly through the air, and the smoke from the gunpowder fills the sky, as the Union soldiers stand firm against the advancing Confederate forces. The Union line, though thin in some areas, held strong, and the Confederate forces suffered heavy losses. The Battle of Gettysburg ended on July 4, 1863, with a Union victory. Both sides had suffered heavy losses, with the Union army losing approximately 23,000 men and the Confederate army losing around 28,000 men. This battle is considered a turning point in the Civil War, as it marked the last major Confederate offensive in the Eastern Theater. This historical photograph, from Mary Evans Prints Online, serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the American Civil War. The image transports us back in time, allowing us to witness the bravery and determination of the soldiers on both sides. The Battle of Gettysburg remains an important event in American history, shaping the course of the Civil War and ultimately leading to its conclusion.
