EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving, dated 1880, captures a memorable moment in the lives of four extraordinary individuals: General Tom Thumb, Lucia Zarate, General Mite, and Frank Uffner. The image was taken at Piccadilly Hall in London during a time when Uffner was importing and exhibiting Zarate and Flynn to the British public. General Tom Thumb, born Charles Sherwood Stratton in 1838, was an American circus performer and midget, who gained worldwide fame for his extraordinary small stature, measuring only 3 feet 7 inches tall. He was a popular figure in Europe and America, and his presence in this photograph serves to give an idea of the relative size of the other two midgets, Lucia Zarate and General Mite. Lucia Zarate, born in Mexico in 1864, was a midget woman, standing at just 21 inches tall. She was brought to Europe by Uffner and became a sensation in London society, attracting the attention of the royal family and the high society. General Mite, born Francis Joseph Flynn in Ireland in 1864, was another midget, standing at 2 feet 7 inches tall. He was also exhibited alongside Zarate, and together they toured Europe and America, entertaining audiences with their unique size and abilities. Frank Uffner, born in Germany, was the promoter who brought Zarate and Flynn to Europe and exhibited them to the public. He is pictured here with the two midgets, showcasing their extraordinary size and talents to the British public. This image provides a fascinating glimpse into the lives of these remarkable individuals and the world of Victorian-era entertainment.
