EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the stern and determined visage of General Sir Horace Lockwood Smith-Dorrien, a prominent British military figure during the First World War. Born in 1858, Smith-Dorrien rose through the ranks of the British Army to become the Commander of the II Corps and later the Second Army of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) between 1914 and 1918. The image shows Smith-Dorrien in full military regalia, wearing the distinctive cap badge of the British Army and adorned in the uniform of a general. The badge on his cap bears the insignia of the 1st Battalion, Royal Welch Fusiliers, a unit under his command during the war. The photograph was likely taken during the early years of the conflict, as evidenced by the pre-1918 design of his uniform and the lack of any battle honors or decorations. Smith-Dorrien played a significant role in the defense of the Ypres Salient in 1914 and 1915, where he was instrumental in holding back the German advance. However, his tactics and decisions during the Second Battle of Ypres, particularly the failure to adequately reinforce the Canadian Corps, have been subject to criticism. Regardless, Smith-Dorrien's leadership and service during the Great War were crucial to the British war effort, and his legacy as a respected and experienced military commander endures to this day.
