EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures General Charles Gordon (1833-1885), also known as "Chinese" Gordon due to his service in China, in his role as the British Military Governor-General of the Sudan. The image, taken around 1885, shows Gordon in full military regalia, wearing a red fez adorned with gold tassels, a white tunic with gold braid and epaulettes, and a sash with the Order of the Bath star and a Sudan Medal. The general's chest is adorned with various medals, including the Order of the Star of India and the Order of the Bath. Gordon's military career began in the British Army in 1852, and he saw action in China, Crimea, and India. In 1874, he was sent to the Sudan to evacuate European nationals from Khartoum following the death of the Mahdist leader, Muhammad Ahmad. However, Gordon chose to remain in the Sudan and attempt to re-establish British control over the region. In 1884, he was appointed Military Governor-General of the Sudan and worked to modernize the Sudanese army and improve infrastructure. Despite initial successes, Gordon's tenure as Governor-General was short-lived. In 1885, the Mahdist forces, led by Abdallahi ibn Muhammad, besieged Khartoum. Gordon and his garrison held out for several months before the city fell in September 1885. Gordon was killed during the fighting, and his death marked the end of British rule in the Sudan for the time being. This photograph is a poignant reminder of Gordon's military career and his tragic end in the Sudan. The intricate details of his uniform and the stern expression on his face convey a sense of determination and resolve, reflecting the general's unwavering commitment to his cause.
