Born on October 22, 1819, in Boston, Massachusetts, Whipple dedicated his life to the pursuit of knowledge and the written word. Whipple's scholarly pursuits began at Harvard University, where he earned his Bachelor's degree in 1839 and his Master's degree in 1841. He went on to study at the École des Hautes Études in Paris, further expanding his knowledge of European literature and culture. Upon his return to the United States, Whipple embarked on a distinguished career as a professor of Greek and Latin at Harvard. In addition to his teaching, Whipple was a prolific writer, contributing to numerous publications and authoring several influential works. His most notable publications include "The Greek Anthology," a translation of ancient Greek epigrams, and "A New Latin Grammar," which became a standard textbook for Latin students. Whipple's work was not limited to classical studies, however, as he also published translations of Dante Alighieri's "Divine Comedy" and Johann Christian Friedrich Hölderlin's "Hyperion." Whipple's contributions to American literature and education extended beyond his written work. He was a founding member of the American Philological Association and served as its president from 1869 to 1870.
