EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the enigmatic and tragic figure of Edward V of England, who reigned for just a few short months in 1483 at the tender age of twelve. Born in 1470, Edward was the eldest son of King Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville. His father's death in April 1483 thrust the young prince into the role of monarch, but his reign was cut tragically short by the machinations of his uncle, Richard III. Edward is depicted here in regal attire, wearing a richly embroidered robe and holding a scepter topped with a golden orb, symbolizing his kingship and authority. The crown, placed on a velvet cushion at his feet, underscores his royal status. The intricate details of the robe and the subtle textures of the fabric add depth and dimension to the print, making it a captivating work of art in its own right. Despite his brief reign, Edward V left an indelible mark on English history. His disappearance from the Tower of London, along with his younger brother Richard Duke of York, is one of the most enduring mysteries of the late medieval period. Many theories have been put forward regarding their fate, from murder at the hands of Richard III to a possible escape and survival in exile. This print offers a glimpse into the life of a young king whose story is shrouded in mystery and intrigue. It serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of power and the uncertainties of history.
