Born into the noble House of Alba, Alvarez de Toledo rose to prominence under the reign of Philip II of Spain, becoming a trusted military commander and diplomat. In 1567, Alba was appointed Governor-General of the Spanish Netherlands, a position he would hold for the next 15 years.
