EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from 1914, the Duchess of Marlborough, Consuelo Vanderbilt (1877-1964), is seen in her elegant finery at the Epsom Derby. Born in the United States as an American heiress, Consuelo was coerced into marrying the Duke of Marlborough, Charles Spencer-Churchill, in 1895, at the young age of 18. The marriage was arranged by her mother, Alva Vanderbilt, who sought to elevate her family's social standing by securing a title for her daughter. Despite the unhappy circumstances of her marriage, Consuelo cut a striking figure in the fashionable world of aristocracy. In this image, she is pictured with a friend, her radiant smile and impeccable attire reflecting the elegance and grace expected of a princess. The Duchess's fashionable ensemble, complete with a large hat adorned with flowers, was a common sight at the races, where she was a regular attendee. After her divorce from the Duke in 1920, Consuelo devoted much of her time to social welfare and philanthropy. She married again in 1923, to Colonel Jacques Balsan, and continued to be a prominent figure in European society until her death in 1964. This photograph serves as a testament to Consuelo's resilience and her enduring presence in the annals of aristocratic history. The image captures a moment in time, when the American heiress, once a reluctant bride, embraced her role as a fashionable and elegant member of the European aristocracy.
