EDITORS COMMENTS
Domitian: The Last Emperor of the Flavian Dynasty (51-96 AD) This statue depicts Domitian, also known as Titus Flavius Domitianus, who ruled the Roman Empire from 81 to 96 AD. Domitian was the last emperor of the Flavian Dynasty, which began with Vespasian in 69 AD and continued with his son, Titus, before passing to Domitian. Born in 51 AD, Domitian ascended to the throne following the death of his brother Titus in 81 AD. His reign, marked by authoritarian rule and paranoia, was a stark contrast to the relatively peaceful and prosperous periods under Vespasian and Titus. Domitian's rule was characterized by a focus on military expansion, the arts, and the restoration of traditional Roman values. This impressive statue, now housed in the Chiaramonti Museum at the Vatican, showcases Domitian in imperial attire, complete with a diadem and toga. The statue's intricate details, including the lifelike features of the emperor's face and the folds of his toga, are a testament to the skill of the Roman sculptors of the time. Domitian's reign came to an end in 96 AD, following a conspiracy led by his own soldiers. His death marked the end of the Flavian Dynasty and the beginning of the Nervan-Antonian Dynasty under Emperor Nerva. This statue serves as a reminder of the complex and fascinating history of ancient Rome and the intriguing figure of Domitian, the last emperor of the Flavian Dynasty.
