EDITORS COMMENTS
The Crest of HMS Marlborough: A Symbol of Naval Power and Honor in the 1920s This print showcases the crest of HMS Marlborough, an Iron Duke-class battleship of the British Royal Navy, named in honor of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough. Built between January 1912 and June 1914 at Devonport Royal Dockyard, HMS Marlborough entered service just prior to the First World War. The Iron Duke-class battleship was a formidable vessel, boasting impressive dimensions and an imposing presence. This crest, featuring the dragon badge, serves as a testament to the power and prestige of the British Royal Navy during the 1920s. After the war, HMS Marlborough was assigned to the Mediterranean Fleet, where it took part in the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War in the Black Sea between 1919 and 1920. The ship also played a role in the Greco-Turkish War. This evocative image, circa 1923, captures the essence of a bygone era, when naval power and military might were symbols of national pride and prestige. The dragon badge, a traditional emblem of the Royal Navy, stands proudly at the center of the crest, a reminder of the courage and determination that defined the British sailors who served aboard HMS Marlborough and other battleships of the era.
