EDITORS COMMENTS
In this intriguing handcolored woodcut print from Auguste Wahlen's "Manners, Customs and Costumes of all the People of the World," published in Brussels in 1845, we find a Circassian man proudly displaying his weapons and traditional attire. The man wears a tall, conical hat adorned with ribbons and a tunic with wide, voluminous skirts. He carries a musket slung over his shoulder, its barrel resting on a case, while a powderhorn is attached to his belt. In his right hand, he holds a curved sword, or kamtchadal, a distinctive weapon of the Circassian people. Beside him, a Kamtchadal woman dressed in a coat decorated with human hair and holding a basket adds to the ethnographic scene. The woman's coat, a traditional garment known as a "pashka," is a striking display of Circassian craftsmanship and cultural heritage. Her basket, likely used for gathering or carrying goods, adds a practical element to the image. This portrait offers a glimpse into the traditional fashion and customs of the Circassian people during the 19th century. The Circassians, an indigenous people of the Northwestern Caucasus region, have a rich history and diverse culture that has been influenced by various external forces throughout history. This print, created by Jean Francois Nicolas Loumyer, is a valuable historical record of their customs and costumes. The intricate details and vibrant colors of the woodcut print bring the scene to life, transporting us back in time to a world far removed from our own. The image is a testament to the enduring beauty and diversity of human culture and serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving and documenting our shared history.
