EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a scene from the operetta "The Chocolate Soldier," composed by Oscar Straus in 1908 with a libretto by Stanislaus Stange, based on George Bernard Shaw's play "Arms and the Man." The image is taken from the production first performed at the Lyric Theatre in London on September 10, 1910. In this scene, Lt. Bumerli, portrayed as a chocolate-loving soldier more concerned with self-preservation than battlefield heroics, is seen lying in Nadina's boudoir, having climbed through the window to evade enemy troops. The intrigued expressions of Nadina, Aurelia, and Mascha as they peer down at him add to the intrigue and humor of the moment. This photograph is from the George Dances Company's touring production, which visited the Assembly Rooms in Market Harborough on September 27, 1912. The First World War era, depicted in this operetta, was a time of great upheaval and change, and "The Chocolate Soldier" offers a delightful and lighthearted glimpse into this historical period.
