EDITORS COMMENTS
Charlemagne, also known as Charles the Great or Carolus Magnus, is depicted in this historic print as a powerful and regal figure, crowned as both King of the Franks and Emperor of the Romans. Born in 742, Charlemagne rose to prominence during a time of political instability in Europe, and through his military prowess and diplomatic skills, he was able to unify much of Western Europe under his rule. Charlemagne is shown here wearing the imperial crown and holding the orb and scepter, symbols of his imperial power. In his right hand, he holds a sword, a reminder of his status as a warrior king. The image dates from around 814, several years after Charlemagne's death in 814, and reflects the reverence in which he was held by later generations. Charlemagne's reign marked a turning point in European history. He is credited with the revival of learning and the arts, and his legal reforms laid the foundation for the modern European legal system. Charlemagne was also the first Holy Roman Emperor, a title that would be held by the German monarchs until the 1806. This historic print offers a glimpse into the grandeur and majesty of the Carolingian Empire, and the enduring legacy of Charlemagne as one of the most important figures in European history. The image is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Europe, and a reminder of the complex and fascinating history that lies behind the continent's modern political landscape.
