Brigadier Gerard, brought to life on the London stage by the renowned actor Lewis Waller in 1906, is depicted in this striking photograph by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and John Cameron. Based on the character from Doyle's popular series "The Exploits of Brigadier Gerard," published in 1896, Gerard is shown here in the uniform of Napoleon's army, his arm raised in a salute, standing proudly on a battlefield. The Imperial Theatre, where the first production of the play took place on March 3rd, 1906, has been crossed out and replaced with the Lyric Theatre in this particular print. Waller, the leading matinee idol of his day, brought an air of theatrical magic to the role of Gerard, making this production a must-see event in popular entertainment of the time.
