This striking photograph captures the moment of triumph for Captain John Alcock (1892-1919), a brave aviator and pioneer of air travel. Dressed in his Royal Air Force uniform, complete with cap, Alcock is shown beaming with pride as he stands next to his aircraft, having successfully completed the first direct transatlantic flight from Newfoundland, Canada to Ireland in June 1919. Accompanied by his navigator, Arthur Whitten Brown, the pair made history with their groundbreaking achievement, which took just over 16 hours to complete. Born in England, Alcock joined the British Army in 1911 and later transferred to the Royal Flying Corps, where he distinguished himself as an accomplished pilot.
