EDITORS COMMENTS
Anna Sten, born Anjuschka Stenski Sujakevitch on February 14, 1908, in what is now Ukraine, was a Russian actress who gained international fame in American films during the 1930s. This black-and-white photograph captures Sten in a moment of quiet introspection, holding a cigarette with an air of sophistication and mystery. Born into a wealthy family, Sten's acting career began in Russia before she emigrated to the United States in the late 1920s. She quickly made a name for herself on the American stage, and her striking beauty and magnetic screen presence soon caught the attention of Hollywood. Sten's first major role in a feature film was in "Nana" (1934), based on Emile Zola's novel. Her performance was met with critical acclaim, and she went on to appear in several other films, including "The Scarlet Empress" (1934) and "The Secret of Madame Blanche" (1933). Despite her success, Sten's career was cut short by her untimely death in 1933, at the age of 25, due to complications from a tonsillectomy. Her tragic passing only served to heighten the intrigue surrounding her talent and potential. This postcard, featuring a striking image of Anna Sten, offers a glimpse into the life of this enigmatic and talented actress, whose brief but memorable film career continues to captivate audiences today.
