EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, published by F.G. Levrault between 1816 and 1830, depicts two fascinating deep-sea dwellers: the Anglerfish, Lophius piscatorius, and the Spotted Handfish, Brachionichthys hirsutus. The Anglerfish, with its distinctive large, bioluminescent lure, is a master of camouflage and ambush in the dark depths of the ocean. Its elongated body and large mouth, filled with sharp teeth, make it a formidable predator. The Spotted Handfish, on the other hand, is a small, colorful fish with a unique body shape and long, slender fingers. It is often found in shallow waters near coral reefs. Unlike the Anglerfish, the Handfish is an omnivore, feeding on algae and small invertebrates. The illustration was created by the skilled hand of Jean Gabriel Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later becoming the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The engraving was expertly executed by Massard, under the direction of Turpin. The intricate details of the Anglerfish and Handfish are beautifully rendered in this historical artwork, providing a glimpse into the natural world of over two centuries ago.
