EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph depicts a British Airco DH 6 trainer in flight during the First World War, with serial number B2612 clearly visible. The DH 6, also known as the "Duke," was a two-seat biplane trainer that entered service with the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) in early 1917. The DH 6 was a significant improvement over its predecessors, featuring a more powerful engine and improved handling characteristics. It was primarily used for training pilots and observers in the fundamentals of flying and gunnery. The open-cockpit biplane design offered an unobstructed view for the trainees, allowing them to fully immerse themselves in the learning experience. As the war progressed, some DH 6s were repurposed for anti-submarine coastal patrol work by the RNAS. Equipped with a bombload, these aircraft played a crucial role in protecting the British coastline from enemy submarines. The image captured here likely shows one of these modified DH 6s in action, with its distinctive bomb bay and anti-submarine equipment visible. The DH 6 remained in service until the end of the war, making a significant contribution to the Allied war effort. This photograph is a testament to the bravery and dedication of the pilots and crews who flew these aircraft, risking their lives to protect their country during the tumultuous years of the First World War.
