EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial print captures the Berkeley Power Station in all its grandeur during its construction in 1960. Located in Berkeley, Gloucestershire, this iconic power station was not only the first commercial nuclear power station in the United Kingdom but also one of the pioneering nuclear reactors of its time. The image showcases a bird's-eye view from the northwest, overlooking the majestic River Severn. The partially completed Berkeley Nuclear Power Station stands tall and proud, with its two Magnox reactors taking center stage. This strategic location near the mouth of the River Severn and Bristol Channel made it an ideal spot for harnessing nuclear energy. Laing, renowned civil engineers, undertook this ambitious project which commenced on January 7th, 1957. After years of meticulous planning and construction efforts, Berkeley Nuclear Power Station finally began operating in 1962. However, as time passed by and advancements were made within the industry, it eventually ceased operations and was decommissioned following closure in 1989. This remarkable photograph serves as a testament to human ingenuity and technological progress during that era. It offers a glimpse into history when nuclear power stations were at their infancy but held immense promise for meeting growing energy demands. Preserved by Historic England Archive under A© license rights granted to Joh (the photographer), this image allows us to appreciate both the architectural marvels of our past and how far we have come since then.
