EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of Coventry Cathedral. The image showcases the unveiling ceremony of the Boulder from Bethlehem, which was brought all the way from a hillside in Bethlehem to serve as the cathedral's new font. Weighing an impressive three tons, this monumental boulder made its journey to Coventry through Manchester Docks aboard the SS Norman Prince. On that memorable day, December 22nd, 1960, amidst great anticipation and excitement, the Bishop and Provost of Coventry Cathedral presided over this historic event. Standing proudly before a gathering crowd is young Henry Sumner, only seven years old at the time and son of one of the foreman carpenters at Coventry Cathedral. It was he who had been chosen for the honor of unveiling this magnificent boulder. Originally placed in front of the baptistery window, it now stands as a symbol of strength and resilience within these sacred walls. This photograph not only captures an architectural milestone but also represents unity between different cultures and faiths. The significance lies not just in its physical presence but also in what it represents – a connection between two distant lands united by spirituality and shared values. This powerful image serves as a reminder that even stones can carry profound meaning when they are imbued with purpose and reverence.
