EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative reconstruction drawing by Peter Dunn of the English Heritage Graphics Team transports us back in time to the pivotal moment of the siege of Dover Castle in 1216. The French forces, led by King Louis VIII, had laid siege to the strategically important castle in their attempt to overthrow King John of England. In this meticulously detailed illustration, we see a French siege tower looming large over the castle walls, its purpose to provide cover for the attackers as they attempted to breach the defenses. The tower, a testament to medieval engineering, is surrounded by a mound of earth and wooden structures, providing additional support and protection for the assault. The castle, a symbol of English strength and resilience, stands defiantly against the invading forces, its towers and battlements clearly visible despite the encroaching siege works. The scene is one of intense conflict and determination, as the two sides clash in their struggle for power and control. This image offers a glimpse into the past, allowing us to imagine the sights, sounds, and emotions of the siege of Dover Castle over 800 years ago.
